What did you want to be as a child, and how has that journey led you to where you are today?
When I was in first grade, I wanted to be a teacher. I haven’t strayed too far from my original plan! I was inspired by my teacher, Mrs. Anderson. She really cared for her students and brought a lot of enthusiasm to the classroom. I never considered librarianship as a kid, but as I got older, I realized how unique and special libraries are. It’s one of the few remaining places where everyone is welcome.
Could you explain some of the responsibilities of your role at IU?
Part of my role involves co-managing our reference desk at Wells Library and the other part of my job is running our makerspace. The Wells Library Makerspace is a creative outlet for students and a passion project of mine. Students can 3D print, borrow digital cameras and audio equipment, or use tools such as a sewing machine or vinyl cutter. I’m passionate about using technology to bring ideas to life and giving students the opportunity to explore creative pursuits outside their academic disciplines. It's been rewarding to develop this service from scratch, and I think it has had a positive impact on a lot of students.
A lot of my time is spent supervising and mentoring students, specifically graduate students in the library science program. I love libraries and I love helping train and prepare future librarians for the profession.
Do you have any advice for other women in IT?
Don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know something. I don’t like the “fake it till you make it” mentality. I think it’s better to be honest and say, “I don’t know, but I’m ready to learn.”
Is there a role model you look up to in your personal or professional life?
I’ve always looked up to my mom. I’m a triplet and have a brother one year older. My parents basically had four babies at once. They both worked full-time and took care of us. My mom was a nurse for over 40 years and just retired this year! I will never comprehend how she managed everything. She has a big heart, an amazing sense of humor, and makes everything fun.
What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
Most of my free time is spent with my family. We are regulars at the public library (no surprise there) and parks around town. When it’s just me, I love going for long walks and staring up at the clouds, exploring new cities, reading, and watching indie films.
