How did you end up at IU?
I came to IU for grad school, and after I got my degree, I worked in the nonprofit field for several years before coming back. It was a long-term goal of mine to work at IU, although I wasn’t sure in what capacity before I found my current role in UITS.
Could you explain some of the responsibilities of your role at IU?
I am in Student Outreach for UITS, so my job is to get the word out about all the technology resources available to students while they are here at IU. This includes a lot of event planning, as well as tabling at events. I also design workshops and classroom activities, create webpages, and manage student employees.
Do you have any advice for finding your place/role in an organization?
Play to your strengths! If you know you’re good at a particular task or in a particular area, try to lean into it so you have an opportunity to shine. It can also help to go where you see a need or a place for improvement, making yourself useful and even indispensable can really help you find a place.
Do you have any advice as a woman in a leadership role?
It’s a delicate line to walk, but my advice would be to be matter of fact about things as much as possible. Don’t apologize, don’t soft-pedal, just act as though you assume as a matter-of-course you will be heard, respected, and treated equally. If you project that as an expectation, it makes it harder for others to take advantage of ambiguity and treat you poorly.
What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
I love to sing! I go to karaoke several times a week around Bloomington and occasionally sing with a live band. I also like to play board games, roller skate, and go for long walks in nature.
